Before Antietam
Age 36, he enlisted and mustered as Private, CompanY B, 5th Ohio Infantry on 20 April 1861 for 3 moths' service and mustered out on 15 June. He enlisted again and mustered into Company E of the 5th Ohio for 3 years on 19 June 1861.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in the left leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at a field hospital on the field and his leg was amputated, and he was in the Smoketown Hospital, but he died there of his wounds on 24 September 1862.
After the War
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
