Before Antietam

Graduated USMA 1842 and served in Mexican and Seminole wars. In 1861 he was a Captain at Fort Sumter, then made Major in 17th US Infantry. In February 1862 he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers, and commanded the 2nd Brigade/1st Division/III Corps at Second Bull Run.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the 1st Division of I Corps and saw heavy action with his Division in the Cornfield and West Woods early on the 17th. He had assumed command of the Division after Brigadier General Hatch was wounded at South Mountain.

The rest of the War

In November 1862 he was promoted to Major General of Volunteers, was at Fredericksburg, and commanded I Corps at Gettysburg after Reynolds fell. Thereafter held no further active command.

After the War

Career Army service and author. Died January 26 1893 at Mendham NJ. Doubleday is commonly but incorrectly credited with originating the game of baseball.
