A 23 year old farmer in Mifflin County, he enrolled there on 9 October 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company C, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry later that month in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
