He enlisted as Private, Company D, 1st Maine Infantry for 3 months' service on 3 May 1861 and mustered out 5 August. Age 43, from Portland, he mustered as Private, Company B, 10th Maine Infantry on 6 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
