Age 18, from Cutler, he enlisted in Company F, 6th Maine Infantry on 12 December 1861.

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died at a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 30 October 1862. He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown.
