Before Antietam
From Burrillville, he enlisted in Company D, 4th Rhode Island Infantry on 8 August 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 September, and Sergeant on 20 November.
On the Campaign
Noted as being acting Lieutenant at Antietam, where he was mortally wounded.
The rest of the War
He died 21 October 1862, was buried at Keedysville, MD, and reinterred in the National Cemetery during or before 1867.

Buffum, 15th Massachusetts Infantry, was killed on 17 September at Antietam. His brother, Cincinnatus Augustus Buffum, also of the 15th Massachusetts, had been killed in action at Balls Bluff, VA on 21 October 1861.
