He died 21 October 1862, was buried at Keedysville, MD, and reinterred in the National Cemetery during or before 1867.

His brother, Cincinnatus Augustus Buffum, also of the 15th Massachusetts, had been killed in action at Balls Bluff, VA on 21 October 1861.
