He was mortally wounded by gunshot (minie ball) in the left thigh in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was treated at a hospital in Frederick, MD, but died of wounds there on 23 October 1862. He was reinterred from burial in Frederick, MD to the National Cemetery in or before 1867.
