Age 18, from Fayette, MI, he enlisted on 1 June in Hillsdale, and mustered as Private, Company H, 17th Michigan Infantry on 19 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by gunshot to the hip at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army Hospital in Frederick, MD on 18 September but died there of wounds and pneumonia on 10 October 1862.
