Age 28, he enlisted on 31 August 1861 in Upper Merion, and mustered as Sergeant, Company I, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 September in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
