From Milwaukee, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 5th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He died of disease in a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 7 December 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried in Hagerstown but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
