He enlisted in Company C, 7th Ohio Infantry on 20 June 1861 at age 22, and was appointed Corporal.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 19 September and was buried in Smoketown, MD. He was reinterred in the Antietam National Cemetery sometime before or during 1867.
