Age 23, he enlisted in Philadelphia on 18 September 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company K, 69th Pennsylvania Infantry on 31 October at Camp Observation, MD. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
