Before Antietam
He enrolled 5 June 1861 as Captain, Company D, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 22 July 1861. By 2 May 1862 he was commanding the Regiment. He was appointed Colonel of the 4th Rhode Island Infantry on 12 June 1862.
On the Campaign
Colonel Steere was wounded in the thigh sometime after 4pm on the 17th in fighting west of the bridge, and was relieved in command by Lieutenant Colonel Curtis.
The rest of the War
He was absent, wounded, to May 1863. He commanded the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Corps from July to September 1863, then in the 18th Corps to May 1864. He commanded the post at Williamsburg, VA to July 1864 and was on leave to September. He mustered out of service on 15 October 1864. He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General 13 March 1865 for gallant and meritorious service during the War.
