Before Antietam
Age 19, he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 36th Ohio Infantry on 28 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his leg in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 16 September and his leg was amputated, but he died of wounds there on 6 October 1862.
