Before Antietam

He was commissioned Adjutant of the 4th Vermont Infantry on 1 August 1862, was promoted to Major on 25 February 1862, and to Lieutenant Colonel on 17 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Colonel on 5 November 1862, was present but not engaged at Gettysburg, and was severely wounded with loss of his right eye at Funkstown, MD on 10 July 1863. He resigned on 2 February 1864. He was breveted to Brigadier General to date from 13 March 1865 for "gallant and meritorious service during the war."

After the War

By 1880 he was a lawyer at New Haven, CT.
