Age 28, he enlisted at Pottsville on 18 September 1861 and mustered there on 23 September as a Private in Company I, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and was originally buried nearby in Burkittsville, MD.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred in the new National Cemetery in about 1867.
