Before Antietam

Age 27, from Groton, he enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company G, 5th Connecticut Infantry on 21 June 1861. He was promoted to Captain of Company H on 2 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present in Maryland. He and they were in Frederick, MD from 15 September onward, and not in action at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major on 3 August 186 and Lieutenant Colonel at the end of that month. He was appointed Colonel on 28 June 1865 but did not mustered at that rank. He was honored by brevet to Colonel on 13 March 1865.
