From Johnson County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 19th Indiana Infantry on 29 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in Middletown, MD on 11 October 1862. He was reinterred from his original burial in Middletown to the new National Cemetery, grave #3483, in about 1867.
