Before Antietam

Age 24, he enlisted on 1 October 1861 at Gouverneur for two years and mustered as Private, Company D, 16th New York Infantry on 8 October. He was promoted to Corporal on 16 October and Sergeant on 26 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in a field hospital in Burkittsville, MD the next day.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial to the new National Cemetery in about 1867.
