From Jefferson County, he enlisted as Corporal in Company E, 3rd Indiana Cavalry on 22 August 1861, and was promoted to Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action - "shot through the heart" - at the Quebec Schoolhouse near Middletown, MD on 13 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred from his original burial in Middletown to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
