Age 19, he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 36th Ohio Infantry on 15 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He died of disease in Sharpsburg, MD on 13 October 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial near the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
