Before Antietam
A 30 year old coal dealer in New York City, he enrolled there on 27 April 1861 and mustered as Captain, Company D, 62nd New York Infantry on 30 June. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 1 October 1861 and Colonel on 31 May 1862 after Colonel Riker was killed at Fair Oaks, VA. He was court-martialled in late 1862, charges not known, and sentenced to be cashiered, but the verdict was rejected by Secretary of War Stanton in April 1863 and Colonel Nevin was restored to command.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland. They arrived on the battlefield of Antietam about 8 a.m. on 18 September 1862 and were not engaged.
The rest of the War
He briefly commanded the Brigade at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863 and mustered out on 29 June 1864 at Petersburg, VA.
