A 22 year old carpenter in Northbridge, he enlisted as Sergeant in Company E, 28th Massachusetts Infantry on 1 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in a field hospital near Keedysville, MD on 22 September 1862. He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
