Age 18, he enlisted in Kingston and mustered as Corporal, Company A, 80th New York Infantry on 14 September 1861. He was appointed Principal Musician on 29 March 1862 but returned to the ranks of Company A on 31 July. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
