Before Antietam

After graduation from West Point in 1857 he was 2nd (July 58) and 1st Lieutenant (30 April 1861) in the 2nd US Artillery. He was appointed Colonel of the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves 27 June 1862.1

The rest of the War

He was wounded while leading the Brigade in General Seymour's place at Fredericksburg in December 1862.2 He resigned his Colonelcy in June 1863, and served the remainder of the War as Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Inspector General. He was recognized by brevets to Captain (awarded May 1862) for gallant and meritorious service at Yorktown, and Major (December 1862) for the same at Fredericksburg.1

After the War

He continued in Regular Army service, having been appointed Captain, 3rd US Artillery on 11 Dec 1865. He was promoted to Major, 2nd US Artillery in April 1885, Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Artillery 6 June 1896, and Colonel, 7th Artillery, 8 March 1898. He was appointed Brigadier General immediately before retiring from active duty in February 1899.1
