From Shullsburg, he enlisted in Company I, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 19 April 1861 as Sergeant. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 1 September 1861 and First Lieutenant on 27 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
