Age 22, he enlisted 2 August 1861 in Kellogsville for three years and mustered as Corporal, Company F, 51st New York Infantry on 18 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 28 September at the Big Spring field hospital near Keedysville, MD. He was originally buried near the hospital, but was reinterred in the new National Cemetery during or before 1867.
