Age 17, giving his age as 18, he mustered as Private, Company E, 16th Maine Infantry on 14 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He died of disease at the Smoketown Hospital near Sharpsburg on 16 October 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial at Smoketown to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
