Before Antietam
In 1858 at about age 17 he killed his father, probably in self defense. He was acquitted of a murder charge after a lengthy trial. He was listed as a laborer from Hastings when he enlisted in Company H of the First Minnesota, mustering as Private on 5 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action - shot through the forehead - at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was originally buried on the Antietam battlefield, and reinterred in the National Cemetery in or before 1867.
