Before Antietam

A 26 year old laborer, he enlisted on 7 March 1861 in New York City as Private, Company G, 8th United States Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 12 September 1862 and died there, probably of disease, on 13 October 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried in Frederick but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.

Burial information from the Antietam Cemetery History,1 as A. Shanghasey. His service from the Register,2 which also has him as John Shaughnassy. Hospital details from the Patient List,3 which says he was admitted with a gunshot wound (?).
