He was mortally wounded by a gunshot in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the City Hotel US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 28 September 1862. He died there of wounds at 4 o'clock in the morning of 9 October 1862.
