Age 19, he enlisted on 16 September 1861 in Norristown, and mustered into service in Harrisburg as a Private in Company F, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on 16 October.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
