Before Antietam
Commissioned First Lieutenant, Company K in April 1861 and Captain, Company C in July. Wounded in action 1 July 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA, captured and paroled 17 July.

Promoted to Major of the regiment in November 1862. Mustered out at end of term of service 8 May 1863 in New York City.
After the War
He applied to the Superior Court for New York County in 1864 for American citizenship. A New York City directory listing for 1880 reads: Brestel Charles, beer, 16 Prince, h 203 Elizabeth
