Age 25, he enlisted in Company E, 7th West Virginia Infantry on 31 July 1861.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds at the hospital at Smoketown, MD on 4 October 1862.
After the War
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
