Age 42, from Allegheny County, he enrolled on 22 July 1861 in Pittsburgh and mustered there as Colonel, 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 July.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned Brigadier General, US Volunteers on 29 November 1862 and served in the Sixth Army Corps, but his commission expired and he resigned his remaining Colonel's commission on 4 March 1863.

After the War

He was an engineer and newspaper writer in Pittsburgh.
