Before Antietam
Giving his age as 44, from Sunapee, he enlisted with his son Charles on 22 April 1861 as a Sergeant in Company D, First New Hampshire Infantry for 3 months' Service. He mustered out on 9 August and enlisted again, on 28 November 1861, as a Private in Company G, 6th New Hampshire Infantry. He was wounded in action at 2nd Bull Run on 29 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He died of disease at Weverton, MD on 25 October 1862.
After the War
He was originally buried in Weverton but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
