He had served as a Private, Company B in the 3-month First Maine Infantry from 3 May - 5 August 1861. At age 22, from Portland, he mustered as Private, Company B, 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867. There is also a stone for him at the Congregational Cemetery, Cumberland Center, ME.
