Age 20, he enlisted at Fairview on 20 October 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company F, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry on 3 November.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
