Before Antietam

About age 30, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company K, 24th Pennsylvania Infantry in Philadelphia for 3 months service on 1 May 1861. After muster-out he again enlisted, on 19 August 1861 in Philadelphia, and was appointed Sergeant. He mustered into service as Private, Company E, 69th Pennsylvania Infantry on 31 October at Camp Observation, MD.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the battlefield to the National Cemetery in about 1867.
