Age 16 (giving his age as 18), from Olive, MI, he enlisted on 1 June in Hillsdale, and mustered as Private, Company H, 17th Michigan Infantry on 19 August 1862 in Detroit.
On the Campaign
He was killed less than a month later in the regiment's first combat action, at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
