Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 28 year old house carpenter living with his mother Ruth in Westbrook, Cumberland County, ME. He served in Company I, First Maine Infantry, a 3-month unit, as Sergeant from 3 May to 5 August 1861. Then age 29, from Westbrook, he mustered as Sergeant, Company I, 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His mother began receiving a pension based on William's service in October 1862.

After the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
