Before Antietam

"Private William Medill [of the Chicago Dragoons] recruited the Fremont Dragoons which became Company G of the Eighth Illinois Cavalry." He was commissioned Captain on 18 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was promoted to Major on 10 September (to date from the 6th) and commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was mortally wounded in action at Williamsport, MD on 6 July 1863. He was admitted to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 8 July but died there of complications from his wound on 16 July 1863.
