Age 19, from Rockingham County, he mustered as Private, Company G, 14th North Carolina Infantry on 5 July 1861 in Rockingham County. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by gunshot and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 2 November 1862 in a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD.
