He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was originally buried "in Rev. J. J. Adams town lot, back of the M. E. Graveyard [possibly St. Paul's]" in Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.

The Bowie List has him as "Shettles". Burial information from Pruett1. Life and service details from roster data compiled by Michael R. Brasher; the Company roll has him as killed outright at Sharpsburg but Federal records show his name on a parole of prisoners of war, dated 27 September 1862.
