He mustered as Private, Company A, 32nd Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861 in Hampton, VA.

On the Campaign

He was (probably) mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He died on the Grove Farm near Sharpsburg on 18 September. He was originally buried "in Mayers' field in the hollow below Grove's house, towards the canal". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
