Before Sharpsburg
Age 19, from New Hanover County, he enlisted in Wilmington on 6 June 1861 as Private, Company F, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the "White House" hospital on the Line farm at Sharpsburg, but died there the same day and was buried on the grounds.
After the War
He was probably reinterred in Hagerstown in about 1872.
