He was a married, 37 year old clerk in New Orleans when he enrolled in Company A, 7th Louisiana Infantry on 7 June 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain on 7 November 1861.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds at a hospital near Sharpsburg while a prisoner of war.
