From Newton County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 12 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds at a US Army field hospital near Sharpsburg on 20 September 1862 and was originally buried "on west side of Mayer's old graveyard."

After the War

He was probably reinterred in the Washington Confederate Cemetery in Hagerstown in about 1874.
