He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He died at a US Army field hospital at Sharpsburg on 20 September 1862. He was originally buried "on west side of Mayer's old graveyard". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
