Before Sharpsburg
From Caroline County, he mustered as Private, Company G, 30th Virginia Infantry on 21 May 1861. He was courtmartialed in October 1861 for being absent without leave, verdict not known. He was appointed Sergeant on 31 December 1861 and commissioned First Lieutenant on 18 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Originally buried "in Samuel Beeler's barn field along the fence, running east from the barn" near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
