He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of disease at Frederick, MD on 4 November 1862 while still a prisoner. He was originally buried "on west side of and in the cemetery at Frederick." Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
