Age 21, from Cabarrus County, he mustered as Private, Company A, 20th North Carolina Infantry on 19 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of disease at Frederick, MD on 4 November 1862 while still a prisoner. He was originally buried "on west side of and in the cemetery at Frederick." Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
